The Blueridge BR-160 dreadnought is very similar to and - by all reports - compares very favourably to the Martin D-28/HD-28. The makers describe it as a "pre-war inspired 'herringbone' dreadnaught". Many owners however simply say it's a lovely guitar in its own right.
There were 61 reviews of this guitar on Harmony Central when I looked
"All I can say is I am delighted with the way it sounds... I have a Takamine(EG-15C) and the Blueridge really is in another league. The sound is so rich and full with great bass and ringing highs."
"For the money, you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT beat this guitar! I purchased this cause I liked the sound...I was preparing to buy a HD-28 LSV Martin (approx $2300.00). Needless to say, I won't be buying anything else..the Blueridge is all I need! Anyone reading this review that has any question whether you will "get what you pay for" need to fear not; this guitar is the real deal! I have been playing for 38 years and currently own a Ovation and have previously owned a D-28. When my wife heard the Blueridge, she immediately commented that it sounded 5 times better the the D-28!"
"i like that old country d-28 sound and this guitar gives it to me.
great for folk, country, classic rock neil young, jimmy page (D-28)
vibe."
"This Blueridge is brighter than the Martin and has slightly less bass,
but its separation of notes is far superior to the Martin. It's a much
more balanced guitar."
"This thing is light but extremely sturdy and well made."
Many players change the factory fitted strings for higher gauge strings and report an improved tone.
The guitar has been well reviewed in the press too - you can find links to several published reviews on the maker's site .
The guitar features solid sitka spruce soundboard and Indian rosewood back and sides
You can hear and see a video at the American store Maury's Music. They also make a systematic comparison of Blueridge with Martin guitars, including video comparisons.
