Gropp Artist Model Guitar in Spruce and Rosewood 883 - fingerboard The woods used - solid spruce and rosewood - are conventional for a guitar of this quality but when compared with guitars from other leading luthiers it is noteworthy that the spruce has been aged by the Gropps for 30 years and the solid Indian Rosewood back and sides have been made from wood aged now for 50 years. The body has been assembled with the distinctive Gropp marquetry inlay and matching purfling. The guitar is French polished with a profound sheen. The soundboard carries a narrow but subtle and intricate rosette in Armin Gropp's very understated style. Strumming this guitar rasgueado shows just how much power can be obtained from a delicately built instrument. There are discreet but useful position markers at frets 5 and 7. The guitar has a comfortable neck profile, slightly flattened at the back, and a very slight curvature of the fingerboard. The most lasting impression I had after playing the guitar briefly was the almost mysterious, reverberant tone when it was played sul tasto.
The guitar comes in its own hard case which is included in the price along with a few essential extras. We have an article on the Gropp father and son team of master luthiers.
